There’s only one thing stopping you from getting what you want. You.
You might be sitting in on your sofa thinking “Actually no, Caroline, what is actually stopping me getting what I want is lack of money/time/energy/opportunity.” Sorry to break the bad news, but you’re just blinded by an obstacle and using it as an excuse to whinge that you’re not getting what you want.
Perhaps what you really want to do is quit the 9-5 and go free-lance doing something you love – but you’ve got a mortgage to pay and a family to support so you don’t. Then, because you aren’t able to do it full time, you decide it’s not worth doing for money at all (and who’s going to pay for it anyway, you’re not even that good, right?) and if you’re not making an income from it, what’s the point of doing it at all? You might as well give up on your dream and just show up every day at your job that makes you miserable – and boy are you going to let everyone you work with how miserable you are!
But maybe you can take a different perspective, try a different way. I don’t know what your situation is, so I don’t know what the different way is for you – but I know it’s there. (Get in touch if you’d like help finding it!)
What can you do?
- Look at your situation objectively, it’s neither good or bad, it is just what it is. So what is it? What parts are within your control and which are not? What action can you take to move forward right now?
- Be creative with it – just because something isn’t the usual way doesn’t mean it won’t work – and it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t, chalk it up to experience and try something else.
- Be courageous – take action even when it seems scary, or you haven’t got everything figured out, it’s better to start now than never start.
- Be compassionate to yourself – you don’t have to achieve this overnight, it might take longer than you’d ideally like, but even if it takes 10 years, it’s better than having 10 years of being miserable and doing nothing about it!
