It’s probably not a wonder that we often give up on whatever crusade we start out on. We think the journey is going to be a rollercoaster, quick and exciting, but it’s not.
The road to success is mostly boring. Whether you are building a business, improving your health, leaving behind feelings of anxiety or kicking a habit it’s doing the same few things over and over again with a few tweaks here and there.
It’s being consistent with those actions, even when you don’t feel like it.
The start of the journey is exciting – you’re doing something different and it’s fun! People applaud you for making a start, they wish you luck on your journey. Bon Voyage!
The end of the journey, if you get there, is also exciting. You’ve arrived! Hurrah! If it’s been a long journey there may even be a welcome committee and a parade in your honour.
Along the way, there will probably be a few highlights, maybe even a couple other people are interested in, but mostly it’s down to you to plod along on your own, ticking off the miles one by one.
Putting one foot in front of the other, over and over again. Dealing with the ups and downs, the twists and turns.
So, how do you want to play this?
Do you want to keep your eyes on the path, grit your teeth and make it to your destination as quickly as you can?
Or, do you lift your head and enjoy the scenery as you go? Stop to smell the flowers and explore the side paths.
There isn’t a right answer there. Maybe you’ll do a bit of both. Maybe a bit of both is the right answer.
Get your head down and make decent progress. When you start feeling yourself flagging, stop and take in your surroundings for a while. Keeping moving forward but slow down the pace and catch your breath until you’re ready to dig in again.
The journey is likely to take a while, so you might as well learn to enjoy it now, rather than waiting until you arrive to start having fun.
